BARE BONES THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTS “HEROES” BY GERALD SIBLEYRAS AT UPTON BISHOP MILLENNIUM HALL ON FRIDAY 23rd JULY
‘Heroes’ chronicles just a few days in the lives of three residents of a French military retirement home. Henri is a World War One veteran who, for the past twenty-five years, has lived in this home for old soldiers in the French countryside. Ten years ago he was joined by Philippe, a veteran of the same campaign, then, just six months ago the trio was completed by the arrival of Gustave another soldier hero of The Great War.
Relative newcomer Gustave professes a restless spirit and vows to escape the home and take the trio to see the exotic haunts of his youth, despite an extreme case of agoraphobia. Philippe, though suffering from a fragment of shrapnel in the skull which frequently renders him unconscious, agrees with Gustave’s plan if only to escape what he considers to be a murderous regime conducted by the senior nun of the establishment. It is left to the less adventurous Henri to inject reason and moderation into the plan.
The play explores in comic fashion, the memories, hopes and fears of the three characters as they explore the escape possibilities.. Tom Stoppard’s translation of Gerald Sibleyras’ witty dialogue demonstrates the warmth of their regard for the three and their situation.
‘Heroes’ was first performed in England in 2005 and won the Lawrence Olivier Award as the best comedy of 2006.
The performance starts at 7.30pm on Friday 23rd July. Tickets at just £5 are available from Bare Bones Box Office (01981-540820) or at the door on the evening of performance.
To contact a member of the clergy, please telephone Neil Patterson at Weston-under-Penyard Rectory on 01989 567229
Ascension Day was marked with a well-attended service in the church at the end of which the intrepid few ascended to the top of the tower to sing the Ascension Day hymn in the evening sunshine.
The Boundary walk took place on the hottest day of the year so far but the route, which took us through the fields and into the shade of the woods among the last of this year’s bluebells, was very pleasant. We were rewarded afterwards with a sumptuous tea and a well-deserved drink. Congratulations to the walkers and thank you to the cake makers and helpers.
Work will get under way over the summer on repairs to the churchyard wall. This will be a relief to us all as it is currently leaning over the lane and causing some anxiety.
On Saturday 10th July there will be a small Garden Party at the kind invitation of Michael and Iola Fass at the Coach House, Old Gore, on the right as you head towards Hereford. There will be teas, a raffle, stalls for plants, cakes, produce and children’s activities and George Bennison is coming to play his accordion. You are welcome to come along from 3pm.
The Garden Party will be followed on the same evening, 10th July, by Music for a Summer’s Evening, a recital at 7pm in the church with soprano Joanne Lucas who has contributed so much already to our heritage by restoring and creating new altar frontals and other fabrics for the church. Tickets at £5 may be ordered on 01989 780 321. Refreshments will be served.
Our ‘Seasons’ Flower Festival will take place on the weekend of 31st July and 1st August, celebrating the changing seasons with floral displays. You will be welcomed with refreshments any time between 11am and 5pm during the weekend.
Don’t forget to book your tickets for the Barn Dance on 25th September. Dick Brice is bringing his band and will be calling the dances and space is limited so book early! More details on the back page.
The Fete usually held on the first Saturday of September will not take place this year. The Events committee is now also running the Christmas Fayre and we feel that we should put all our energies into this. The format of the September Fete is very similar to the Fayre so we are looking for a new team to take it on, who might have some fresh ideas. If you would be willing to become involved, please contact Olivia on 01989 780321. Please also ring the same number if you wish to have, or a willing to help with a stall at the Christmas Fayre which will be held on Saturday 4th December.
The Prayer Group meeting is on Wednesday 7th July and 4th August in the Church at 2 p.m. Everyone welcome. The green ‘Pray for’ cards can be found on the church Sales Table or by contacting Brenda on 750425 or Linda on 780226. Your confidence will be respected.

Matters Arising:
Election of Officers: Robert Wallbridge was elected as Chairman, Peter Fray as Vice Chairman and Allison Chalmers as Footpath Officer.
Housing Need – Concerns were raised by Cllrs that areas were being grouped together. The Parish Council decided they would like specifics in the questionnaire that relate to Upton Bishop. It was suggested that something is put in the Chimes regarding the Housing Needs Study, as the proposed land is not being used for the benefit of the parishioners.
Neighbourhood Watch – It was considered that something should be put into the Chimes about how this works within the parish in order to make parishioners more aware. Wendy Powell will be asked to attend meetings on a quarterly basis.
Footpaths – Cllr. Chalmers reported that the stile at Wobage Farm has still not been repaired. The Clerk confirmed that this had been reported to Herefordshire Council and she will chase this up.
Highways – Potholes – these have not been repaired satisfactorily within the parish. Cllrs questioned whether the parish is within North or South Herefordshire. The Clerk will make enquiries.
